A rural eco B&B near beach and town
Casa Gaia is tucked away in the countryside between lovely historic Vejer (5 min) and the wide unspoiled beaches of the Costa de la Luz (15 min). Your room offers a peaceful retreat after a day on the beach or a night on the town, plus great views.
Casa Gaia is our family home, a beautiful ecological house replete with loving details: wooden ceilings, terracotta tiles, stone walls, natural render, a small covered patio with a sea view and large patio area in full sun… the house floods with soft amber light on long summer afternoons and is a fantastic place to relax after a walk in the nearby natural park or a day at the beach.
DESCRIPTION
Our B&B guest room is on the ground floor, next door to the shared bathroom. French windows open out onto a little shaded patio area with small table and chairs for your exclusive use. The kitchen and living room area will be shared with us (like the bathroom). Although we don’t provide a breakfast for our guests, you are welcome to help yourself to tea, coffee, milk, bread and spreads in the morning, and you are can use the kitchen for making snacks and meals whenever you want if you do your own shopping. You will also have access to other outdoor spaces such as terraces and covered patios and gardens. We have a studio that we also rent which has some terraced areas that are kept private when it is occupied.

LOCATION
Our house is located in a beautiful valley with fields planted to crops such as wheat and sunflowers. To the south we are bordered by wild olives, to the north by grazing land for the local long-horn cattle breed – the Andalusian Retinto. To the west you will find our nearest neighbour, 50m away, and to the east more neighbours. The locals are a happy mix of farmers who have been here for generations and incomers with alternative backgrounds from other parts of Spain and Europe.
Our home is surrounded by flower, vegetable and herb gardens, all developing slowly but beautifully. Much of our land is in the process of being reforested. In spring, autumn and winter you can expect everything to be a vibrant green, with plenty of visiting birds (we are on one of the main migratory routes between Europe and Africa). Summer is a different story – very dry, but great beaches nearby and fantastic nightlife near the coast and in the towns. Spring especially offers an abundance of flowers.
Everyone in this valley relies on solar and wind power, which makes this an ideal spot for star gazing – the Milky Way is often visible spread across the sky, and there can be few better things to do on a summer night than lounge back with a glass of wine and watch for shooting stars…
If you are someone who likes to hear the call of an owl on the roof, if you love to fall asleep accompanied by the song of the nightingale in spring and summer, if you enjoy the singing of frogs after a shower of rain, then this is the place for you.
• 1.5km from the small village of San Ambrosio with its two bars and the Natural Park “La Breña” behind.
• 5 km from the pueblo blanco Vejer de la Frontera, and a little further from the unspoilt beaches of the Costa de la Luz for example Zahora and Los Caños de Meca.
• The house is reached on local, graded roads. On clear nights on the drive from Vejer to the studio you can see the lights of Morocco in the distance!
FACILITIES, TRANSPORT & HOUSE RULES
We provide: Wireless internet, walking maps of the area, local jogging routes, sheets, beach and shower towels, toilet roll, self service breakfast supplies, mostly organic products.
The house is completely independent of mains: electricity is supplied by solar panels, and water is from a well. It stands in an acre of grounds, some planted as permaculture vegetable and flower gardens, and a large part is reforested with carob, wild olive, acacia etc. On clear nights you can see the Milky Way!!
Jo and Chris (your hosts) are warm and friendly and offer a ready welcome. After more than 20 years living in the area, we have detailed knowledge of the area that we are always happy to share. We’ll talk about permaculture, solar energy, places to visit and sustainability to anyone who expresses an interest too!
We will be on hand to help with any questions, but we are happy to leave you in peace if you prefer! We have several cats, but they don’t come inside the house (not for the want of trying!!)
Although we have had people staying here relying entirely on bicycles for transport, we don’t recommend this in summer. We recommend hiring a car if you don’t bring your own.
Although we don’t serve breakfast to our guests you are welcome to help yourselves to tea, coffee, milk, bread and spreads etc in the morning…
We like our guests to relax, chill out and have fun. Apart from that rule, we ask our guests not to feed our cats or let them in the house. Please don’t use hair dryers, curling tongs, irons etc because the solar system can’t cope with electrical items that produce heat. (You’re fine to charge your mobile or computer, although it’s better to do this by day if you can). No smoking inside the house. Toilet paper in the bin provided. And that’s about it!
